Dear School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program Students,
Bon jour! Salaam! Guten tag! Namaste! Merhaba! Sannu! Szia! Jambo! Ni hau! Greetings from around the world! And what a world it is. It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears. And while one can never learn everything about it, in the coming week there are plenty of events and opportunities where you can expose yourself to different cultures, ideas, and viewpoints. To experience languages and cultures from around the world, be sure to check out the Poetries-Politics exhibition in the Academic Building tomorrow and Friday from 9-5. To learn about different ideas from incredibly successful women register for the Women Entrepreneurs Leading Change next Monday. To see a different viewpoint, check out the book talk with Professor Saladin Ambar that day as well. Learn about all of these things this spring in one of our honors courses. If you only have a few minutes, read about how one honors student learned more about world issues this past summer on the SASHP Blog. And to share your perspective with the world, be sure to check out how you can share information about events through the SASHP twitter account, @RU_SASHP down below.
In the meantime, as we continue to rotate on this mostly water covered rock we call home, remember it’s a world that we share, so it’s time we’re aware it’s a small world after all.

Honors Events
Poetries-Politics ExhibitionPoésies-Politiques / Poetries-Politics is an international conference drawing scholars and poets from around the globe to discuss and read texts illuminating the fluid and ever-changing relations between poetry and politics. The exhibition, which will include over 100 great political poems from Antiquity to the present representing a vast array of languages and cultures, will feature printed posters individually designed through a collaborative process with Visual Arts students from Mason Gross School of the Arts, as well as films on the poster-poems and on the "making" of the exhibition. Attending either day will count as a Colloquium event. Find out more here.

Frère Jacques, Dormez-vous?La Chanson: Songs of France 420:392:H1/01, Professor Uri Eisenzweig; Tuesday 3 (11:30-12:50) - Thursday 4 (1:10-2:30), AB 1180, CAC
The course will introduce you to a variety of French songs. You will get acquainted with the history of French songs. You will learn about France, past and present, through French songs. And you will actually be singing French songs, accompanied by an accordion! Can count as an Honors course! Can also be taken in French! |
A Tale of Two UprisingsIn connection with the spring course "Exile under Nazism and Communism" Professor Nancy Sinkoff (Jewish Studies/History) will lead 15 students on a week-long global field experience, "A Tale of Two Uprisings," to Poland immediately after the semester. Building on the literary and historical themes of the course, high achieving students will visit two cities, Warsaw and Cracow, with day trips to Nowa Huta (The New Steel Mill), east of Cracow, and to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the Nazi concentration and death camps.

A Book Talk with Professor Saladin AmbarMario Cuomo, the longest-serving Democratic governor of New York, was a powerful orator and a liberal champion for the Democratic Party’s progressive legacy. He is often remembered most for what he did not become: President of the United States.
And yet, as Saladin Ambar, an Associate Professor of Political Science and Senior Scholar at the Eagleton Center on the American Governor, argues in American Cicero: Mario Cuomo and the Defence of American Liberalism, Cuomo was far more than a passing figure in American politics. Doris Duke Conservation Scholars ProgramThe Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at the University of Michigan (DDCSP UM) is a two-year research and internship opportunity for bright, curious undergraduate students interested in conservation, nature, and the environment. The program is aimed at bringing more undergraduates currently underrepresented in the environmental field into the conservation arena. In addition to a $4250 stipend, accepted students will also receive room and board, a discretionary allowance and travel expenses to and from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Please note that the application deadline is January 31, 2018. The program dates are June 2nd through July 28, 2018. Call for Submissions Rutgers Journal of BioethicsContribute to the 9th issue of the Rutgers Journal of Bioethics. We accept the following submissions: opinion editorials (1-3 pages in length), long and short book reviews (1-10 pages, include bibliographic information on book) and research papers (8-15 pages in length of content, not including citations).
