The opening for Zimmerli Art Museum's Five Decades, a work by Melvin Edwards, is on Thursday, September 24th. We mention this because Melvin Edwards, a former professor of sculpture at Rutgers University, will be our special guest speaker at Honors Colloquium on Wednesday, September 30th.

Join the SASHP Artists Collective at their first drawing session this Friday and have fun practicing sketches with Honors artists just like you! The Drawing Session will be on Friday, September 25 at 3:30-4:30 PM.

Our first coffeehouse of the semester is also on the same night! Use the SASHP Artists Collective as an outlet for artistic expression and appreciation and join us in playing and listening to music, reading poetry, and sharing your writings with fellow artists! The Coffeehouse will be on Friday, September 25 at 8:30-11:00 PM.

Marlon James was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1970. James' second novel, The Book of Night Women, won the 2010 Dayton Literary Peace Prize, The Minnesota Book Award, a finalist for the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award in fiction, and an NAACP Image Award. He was also Go On Girl Book Club's Author of the year. His first novel, John Crow's Devil (2005), was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Commonwealth Writers Prize, and was a New York Times Editor's Choice. His short fiction has appeared in Esquire, Kingston Noir, and Silent Voices, and his nonfiction has appeared in Granta, Publisher's Weekly and The Caribbean Review of Books. In his third novel, A Brief History Of Seven Killings, James is exploring multiple genres: the political thriller, the oral biography, and the classic whodunit to confront the untold history of Jamaica in the late 1970's; of the assassination attempt on Bob Marley, and the country's own clandestine battles of the cold war.

Celebrate homecoming at Rutgers University–New Brunswick at Run for RAH, a 5K run and 1-mile fun walk on September 27 beginning at 8 a.m. at High Point Solutions Stadium, Piscataway. Born without arms as the result of a severe birth defect, Jessica Cox never allowed herself to believe in limitations. She is now a certified airplane pilot, a mentor, and an advocate for the disabled. Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Nick Spark, Right Footed chronicles her extraordinary story and follows her over a period of two years, as she works on behalf of disabled children and adults in the U.S. and abroad.
