Shakespeare in Bollywood? The idea seems incongruous! And yet, Bombay filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj has reinvented Macbeth, Othello, and Hamlet for audiences worldwide and to great acclaim. From epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata to the modern novel, many of the most celebrated films of South Asia are adaptations of literary works. In this seminar, we will engage with a wide range of South Asian films and the literary works they are based on or “inspired by”.
** Due to popular demand, Professor Sen has removed the required film screening on Tuesday evening (6:40 to 9:30 p.m.).
This course will Count Towards SAS-African, Middle Eastern & South Asian Languages & Literature Major and Minor; Counts in the SAS Core as a Writing Course (Writing in the Discipline).

 Check out a new and truly exciting global field experience to Poland in May with Professor Nancy Sinkoff! The 1-credit field experience is open to Rutgers Honors students, SAS Honors students, and to students taking Professor Sinkoff's spring course, "Exile under Nazism and Communism." Airfair subventions will be available for all students. Honors students do NOT need to take Professor Sinkoff’s spring course in order to participate in the trip to Poland.
Professor Sinkoff's course, "Exile Under Nazism and Communism," will explore the experience of Poles and Polish Jews under Nazi and Communist rule in the 20th century through history, travel writing, memoir, poetry, and film. Interested in this course? Register for the class today!

"The Future of Privacy, Free Speech, and the Curse of Bigness: What Louis Brandeis Means Today"
Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Louis D. Brandeis was the greatest critic of what he called "the curse of bigness" in business and government since Thomas Jefferson. On the 100th anniversary of Brandeis's Supreme Court confirmation, Jeff Rosen argues that Brandeis can teach us more than any other justice about the future of free speech, freedom from government surveillance, and the dangers of big banks and corporations who take reckless risks with what Brandeis called "other people's money."
This talk will make a passionate case for why Brandeis matters and what he can teach us about current questions involving the Constituion, monopoly, corporate and federal power, technology, privacy, and free speech. Free and open to the public.

 Jersey Collective, a collaborative New Jersey Instagram project, is holding a photography exhibition at the Rutgers Art Library in New Brunswick, NJ. The show will open on Saturday, January 16, 2016 and remain on view in the library until February 18, 2016. The images are a celebration of the first year of the project.
Jersey Collective is a New Jersey-centric Instagram account that has a different photographer (anyone from a professional to an amateur with a smartphone) take over the account each week. Each photographer is given the freedom to post as they wish, as long as the photos are taken in New Jersey.

Opportunities
The Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research offers Project L/EARN, an exciting program designed to increase graduate school enrollment among students from groups that are traditionally under-represented in health-related graduate programs, such as students from economically disadvantaged communities; first-generation college-attendees; African-American, Latino, Native American, and Pacific Islanders; those with disabilities; and students with strong interests in health disparities.
We invite sophomore and junior students with an interest in health, mental health, or health services research to apply to the Project L/EARN Summer 2015 research training program. Students from any U.S. college or university are welcome to apply. Applicants must satisfy all five of these criteria:
- Have at least one full academic year left to complete their undergraduate degree,
- Have completed at least one course in statistics or quantitative methods by the time the summer program begins. Click here for list of approved courses.
- Able to be in New Jersey from Tuesday, May 31 through Friday, August 5, 2016 for the summer training program
- Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent U.S. resident attending a U.S. university.
- And be a member of at least one of the groups specified as under-represented in graduate education, such as, but not limited to those from economically disadvantaged communities, first generation college attenders, those from racial/ethnic minority groups (African-American, Latino, Native American, and Pacific Islanders), those with disabilities, or with strong interests in health disparities

The Rutgers Research Review, known as R-Cubed, is a newly established online journal. The purpose of R-Cubed is to promote awareness of research performed by Rutgers undergraduates in all disciplines and to discuss the research experiences of students and professors within the community.
The journal is looking for articles to publish. Deadline for submission is February 15th.

The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy announces the 2016 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program at Rutgers University. The program is intended for highly motivated undergraduates interested in a research career in the pharmaceutical and environmental sciences. Students are provided with an opportunity to conduct full-time research in areas related to Pharmacology and Toxicology, Environmental Health Sciences, Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Clinical Pharmacy. The SURF program is open to undergraduate students currently enrolled at a university in the United States. Previous experience performing independent laboratory or clinical research is not required. Mentors are not needed to apply.
The 10-week program will run May 23 through July 29, 2016 and provides a $2,800 stipend. Students must be available for the entire 10-week period. Training includes hands-on research conducted in the laboratories or clinical practices of faculty members, round table discussions of research progress, and seminars on research careers and activities of the faculty. Students also participate in career development workshops, a field study, and a field trip to a pharmaceutical company. At the end of the fellowship, each student will provide a brief oral presentation on his or her summer research project.
