Dean Takács received her B.A. in Classics from the University of California, Irvine, her M.A. and Ph.D. in History from UCLA (she also attended the University of Heidelberg and the Free University in Berlin). Before she came to Rutgers, she taught at the University of Oregon, at UCLA, and at Harvard where she also held the position of academic dean. Professor Takács studies the Roman and Byzantine world and teaches in the department of History. Her book, Vestal Virgins, Sibyls, and Matrons: Women in Roman Religion, looks at Roman women and the role they played maintaining Rome’s socio-political structure as well as the understanding of the Roman self by means of religious rituals. Professor Takács' newest book, The Construction of Authority in Ancient Rome and Byzantium, investigates the power of rhetoric through the traditional virtues of the ancient Romans (the mos maiorum). She is also the editor of a monograph series (Roman Studies: Interdisciplinary Approaches). Professor Takács is the dean of the School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. email:

Dean Hashemi is the coordinator for honors on the Livingston Campus. She was born and raised in Iran, though she has lived in the U.S. for most of her life. She loves Rutgers—her daughter graduated from the Honors Program! She finished her BA and MA in Economics, the latter from Columbia University, and she received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Rutgers University, having written a dissertation on Asian female immigrants in the U.S. She says she "switched to sociology because she wanted to know more about social issues and what motivates people besides money." She loves to travel, is a self-proclaimed news junkie, loves to read history books and novels, and loves swimming, roller blading, and walking. In her free time, she enjoys going to the city to museums and the ballet, and to free concerts in the park.
